The game offers a mixture of tactical fights, area control, and resource gathering, with each game turn broken into clearly defined phases. The objective? Score victory points by slaying monsters, collecting shards, defeating enemy heroes, and completing scenario objectives. And while the action can be fierce, the system remains relatively accessible after a few rounds.

Between missions, you can upgrade your characters with powerful new abilities, weapons, or runes. These permanent advancements allow you to slowly shape your warband’s identity while preserving the integrity of the original gameplay engine. Notably, the campaign doesn’t overwhelm players with complex narrative choices or branching storylines. Instead, it provides structure and progression while letting the action and player dynamics shine. It feels like a leaner approach to legacy gameplay, focused more on mechanical evolution than storytelling.

The boards are modular and provide varied layouts across different scenarios. The iconography is easy to follow, and while there are several tokens to manage, the overall component design supports a smooth game flow. Setup and teardown times are reasonable for a game of this scope, particularly when not using all campaign elements.

The core game already offers solid replay value, but the optional expansions add further variety. New heroes and enemies diversify your tactical choices and present different playstyles.
